The Story of Bitcoin Pizza Day

A few days before this historic date of May 22, 2010, computer developer Laszlo Hanyecz, a resident of Florida, proposes to take on a challenge. On May 17, he writes on a forum that he will attempt to buy pizzas with bitcoins. The cryptocurrency, which has existed for just over a year, has never been used for a "real" and tangible purchase like this.

"I would pay 10,000 bitcoins for a couple of pizzas. Maybe two large ones, so I have one to have leftovers for the next day. I like to have some pizza left to snack on later," he writes.

At the time he makes this transaction, one unit of bitcoin costs only $0.008 — which explains why these pizzas would be so expensive today. On May 22, he announces that he has successfully ordered pizzas by making a transaction in bitcoin, which he had previously obtained by mining them.
