Tokyo is home to the world’s largest underground flood protection system, the Metropolitan Area Outer Underground Discharge Channel. Located beneath Kasukabe city, this massive structure stretches over 3.7 miles and was built to protect the region from heavy rainfall and flooding—challenges made worse by climate change and urban expansion.

Costing around $1 billion, the system uses giant tunnels and a huge underground tank supported by 59 concrete pillars.
