GENIUS Act advances in the US Senate: what does this mean for the future of stablecoins and the crypto market?
What is the GENIUS Act?
It is a legislative proposal focused on creating a clear regulatory framework for stablecoins, including:
Rules for issuers like USDT and USDC
Collateral and audit requirements
Direct federal oversight
Limits for algorithmic stablecoins
Why does this matter?
Legal certainty: Crypto companies can finally operate with clarity in the US.
Institutional adoption: Banks, asset managers, and fintechs can engage with more confidence.
Global impact: The US regulating stablecoins may force other countries to keep pace.
Centralization risk: Some criticize the bill for giving too much power to authorities.
My personal view:
Despite regulatory concerns, this is an important step towards consolidating the use of stablecoins as global infrastructure. Crypto needs to stop operating “in the shadows” to achieve mass adoption — and the GENIUS Act could be the beginning of that.
I am optimistic, but cautious: more rules also mean more responsibility for projects. Those who do not adapt will be left behind.
