🤑🤑🤑A bank customer receives 81 trillion in their account by mistake and the employees don't realize: they were supposed to receive only 280 🤪
A customer of Citigroup was the protagonist of a very surprising episode when they received a payment of 81 trillion dollars in their bank account, an astronomical figure that turned out to be an internal error of the bank. This erroneous transaction, which was supposed to be only 280 dollars, initially went unnoticed by two employees responsible for verifying the payment before its authorization. The error was detected by a third employee 90 minutes after the amount was registered, but the process to reverse the operation took several hours.
According to a report accessed by Financial Times, the funds never left Citigroup's internal accounts. The bank notified the incident to the Federal Reserve and the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC), describing it as a “quasi error.” In later statements to People magazine, Citigroup assured that its internal controls quickly identified the problem and that they reversed the transaction with no impact on the customer or the institution. Additionally, the bank emphasized that its preventive systems would have prevented any outflow of funds to external accounts.
