Rani Lakshmibai, the Queen of Jhansi, was one of the most prominent figures of the Indian Rebellion of 1857. Born as Manikarnika Tambe, she became queen after marrying the Maharaja of Jhansi. When the British East India Company tried to annex Jhansi under the Doctrine of Lapse, she fiercely resisted. A skilled warrior and astute leader, she famously declared, "I shall not surrender my Jhansi." She fought bravely on the battlefield, even with her adopted son tied to her back, and became a symbol of courage and resistance against British rule. She died fighting, cementing her legacy as a national heroine.
