Donald Trump held a two-hour phone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin on May 19, 2025.
During the call, both leaders agreed to initiate immediate ceasefire talks aimed at ending the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine. Trump hailed the move as a step forward and confirmed that negotiations would begin "without delay." He also reached out to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and European leaders to inform them of the development.
Putin described the exchange as "useful and open" but stopped short of committing to an actual ceasefire. He said Russia is open to discussing a "potential peace agreement", but only without an initial ceasefire in place.
Trump stated that the U.S. has a 'red line' regarding the situation, though he did not elaborate. He also added, "This is a European issue and should remain a European issue."
President Zelensky voiced concerns, warning that a reduced U.S. role in peace talks could favor Russia and hinder the broader peace process.
Meanwhile, Russian troops continue their offensive in eastern Ukraine, particularly in the Donetsk and Pokrovsk regions, where intense fighting is ongoing.
