U.S. Rejects Millions of Dollars Worth of Indian Mangoes, Shipments Sent Back
The sweet aroma of Indian mangoes, which New Delhi often marketed as South Asia’s soft power, turned into a foul smell at American airports this year. At least **15 containers—labeled with premium Alphonso and Kesar varieties—were rejectedat Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Atlanta airports. The reason? The irradiation process(conducted in Mumbai on May 8-9) was not properly documented under the PPQ-203 form.
Rather than untangling the bureaucratic mess, exporters chose to let $500,000 worth of mangoes go to waste. Shipping them back would have doubled the losses due to high freight costs.
