🗣️🔢 EPIC DEBATE AT $BTC ! 🤯 "Sats" out 👋, "bits" in 🎉?
A new proposal 💡 has ignited the spark 🔥 in the community #bitcoin ₿: change the basic unit! The goal is to make it easier to understand for everyone 🧑🤝🧑 when it comes to paying 💸. But beware!, not everyone agrees 🙅♂️.
Developer John Carvalho launched BIP-177 📜, wanting to say goodbye 👋 to "satoshis" (#sats ) - imagine, 1 BTC is 100,000,000 sats! 😵💫 - and divide the 21 million BTC into 21 quadrillions of units! 🤯 This follows an idea from 2017 by Jimmy Song about using "bits" (1 bit = 0.000001 BTC) 🤏, but Carvalho says that would still make us think in decimals 0️⃣.
The very Jack Dorsey 👨💼 (CEO of Block Inc.) supports the change to "bits" 👍, saying that "sats" are a mess for newcomers! 😵💫➡️😊 "Bitcoin bits are better, and only Bitcoin is the best!", he tweeted 🐦.
But... the resistance is strong! 💪 Cory Klippsten (CEO of Swan Bitcoin 🦢) and Michelle Weekley (of Byte Federal 🏦) say: "People understand cents ¢ in a dollar 💲, they will understand sats in a Bitcoin!" 🤔. They even warn that the change could make it seem like Bitcoin has collapsed 📉 and its supply has ballooned endlessly 🎈! Parker Lewis (of Zaprite ⚡) also defends the simplicity of "sats" 👌.
A note to consider! 👀 The very Satoshi Nakamoto 👻, the creator of Bitcoin, was open to changing how the units were perceived if it made it easier to use! 🤩
But, calm down! 🧘♀️ The Bitcoin network hasn't changed anything major since the Taproot upgrade in 2021 ⏳. So this debate... still has a long way to go! 🛣️
Would you switch "sats" for "bits" to help more people understand Bitcoin? 🧑🤝🧑 Or do you think "sats" are part of its essence?
