🔐 Key Components of the Ethereum Security Initiative
1. ETH Rangers Program
Launched in December 2024, the ETH Rangers Program offers stipends of $25,000 USD over six months to individuals dedicated to advancing public goods security within the Ethereum ecosystem. Eligible activities include vulnerability research, educational content creation, pro-bono incident handling, and the development of security tools. The program aims to incentivize contributions that bolster the security and resilience of Ethereum's infrastructure.
2. Ethereum Protocol Attackathon
In collaboration with Immunefi, the Ethereum Foundation hosted its first-ever Attackathon from November 25, 2024, to January 20, 2025. This crowdsourced security audit competition featured a reward pool of $1.5 million, attracting security researchers to identify and report vulnerabilities in the Ethereum protocol. The event included an educational phase with live technical walkthroughs and content from the Attackathon Academy to prepare participants.
3. Protocol Security Research Team
The Ethereum Foundation's Protocol Security Research team is a dedicated unit focused on safeguarding Ethereum's integrity. Comprising approximately 10 experts, the team conducts thorough code reviews, develops advanced tooling, and performs real-world simulations to identify and mitigate risks. They also manage the Ethereum Bug Bounty Program, collaborating with client teams and other ecosystem partners to enhance network security.
