Ethereum is an open-source blockchain platform and digital currency that was launched in 2015 by Vitalik Buterin. The native currency of the Ethereum network is known as Ether (ETH) and is used to pay transaction fees and power applications on the network. Ethereum is considered the backbone of many decentralized finance (DeFi) projects and non-fungible tokens (NFTs). In 2022, Ethereum transitioned to a proof-of-stake mechanism instead of mining, which reduced energy consumption.
