A unique diamond was sold at auction for over $21 million

At Sotheby’s auction in Geneva, the diamond “The Mediterranean Blue” was sold. The starting price was 9 million francs, and after a heated battle, the gem went under the hammer to a private collector for 17.9 million francs ($21.5 million).

The “stone” weighing 10.3 carats of deep blue color was recently mined in South Africa at the legendary Cullinan mines. The diamond was first presented to the world in March, and last month it became the star of Sotheby’s exhibition in Abu Dhabi, where it was showcased alongside seven other jewels with a total value of over $100 million.

At Sotheby’s, it was called one of the most impressive blue diamonds they have ever sold. At the same time, some experts noted that the auction could have been even more vigorous if it weren't for global economic uncertainty and tensions between the USA and China.
