#CryptoRegulation New Trouble for India

In the Indian city of Dehradun, nuclear material was seized from the possession of five individuals. If this were an isolated incident, it might not have raised such serious concerns. However, last year, radioactive material worth $100 million — Californium — was also recovered from India, and in 2021, at least three government-confirmed incidents of radioactive theft came to light. Three years, five incidents — each one raising serious questions.

These events are not mere outcomes of accidental negligence. They are undeniable evidence of an organized black market for nuclear materials. Smuggling radioactive substances is not like regular smuggling that can be caught by sniffing dogs at the border. It requires internal collusion, forged documents, and breaches in surveillance systems. The matter is simple: if radioactive material can be smuggled out, terrorists can just as easily infiltrate in.

Now, the Government of Pakistan has decided to raise this issue at the international level — and that could pose a serious threat for India if this escalates.
