Pakistan has signed a cryptocurrency agreement with World Liberty Financial (WLF), a DeFi company that the Trump family owns about 60%. The timing of the signing raised many questions as it occurred just days after peace negotiations between India and Pakistan. While Trump claims to have played a role in this peace, India has not confirmed it.
Pakistan's New Electronic Currency Council and WLF Accelerate Innovation
According to TOI, the Pakistan Electronic Currency Council (PCC) has signed a series of agreements with WLF to promote investment and cryptocurrency innovation, although the PCC has only been operational for a month. "WLF has signed a notable Letter of Intent with PCC to accelerate blockchain innovation, implement stablecoin, and integrate DeFi in Pakistan," as stated in the Ministry of Finance's press release.
Key Figures in the WLF Delegation
The WLF delegation includes Zachary Witkoff, the son of Trump's envoy, and prominent figures such as Eric Trump, Donald Trump Jr., and Jared Kushner. Steve Witkoff, the New York real estate billionaire and Trump ally, also attended, meeting with top Pakistani officials including the Prime Minister, Chief of Staff, and Minister of Defense to strengthen relations.
Ambition to Turn Islamabad into a Digital Asset Hub
The PCC was established to transform Islamabad into the leading digital asset hub in South Asia, receiving a major boost when Changpeng Zhao (CZ), the founder of Binance, became a strategic advisor. Pakistan has a strong cryptocurrency foundation, ranked 9th globally by Chainalysis in 2024, with about 25 million users and $300 billion in annual transactions. With support from WLF and CZ of Binance, Pakistan intends to compete with leading regional countries like the UAE, focusing on blockchain technology.
