Foresight News reports that Caroline Pham, the acting chair of the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), plans to resign after the new chair takes office. Republican commissioner Summer Mersinger has confirmed she will take over as CEO of the Blockchain Association in June. If both leave at the same time, the CFTC will only have Democratic commissioner Kristin Johnson and potentially the new chair Brian Quintenz, resulting in a 1:1 party ratio (instead of majority party control). Congress is currently reviewing legislation to expand the CFTC's regulatory authority over cryptocurrencies, and a lack of commissioners may affect the legislative process. The normal composition of the CFTC should consist of 5 commissioners, including 3 from the majority party and 2 from the minority party.
