Russian Su-35 Fighter Jets Violate Estonian Airspace Over Baltic Sea.
Tallinn, Estonia (May 14, 2025) – Tensions surged in the Baltic region as Estonia officially confirmed that two Russian Su-35 fighter jets entered its sovereign airspace near the island of Hiiumaa on Tuesday, May 13. The incursion, which lasted under a minute, occurred without a filed flight plan, transponders were turned off, and no communication was made with Estonian air traffic control.
This alarming breach marks the fourth Russian airspace violation in 2025, according to the Estonian military. In response, the Estonian Foreign Ministry has summoned Russia’s chargé d’affaires and issued a formal diplomatic protest.
The Russian Defense Ministry has denied the violation, claiming the jets were conducting routine operations over international waters in full compliance with international laws.
Estonia is a NATO member, and such airspace violations are taken extremely seriously, particularly in the current climate of increased regional tension. NATO fighter jets under the Baltic Air Policing mission frequently intercept Russian aircraft operating without transponders or flight plans in the area.
