An armed gang attempted to kidnap the daughter and granddaughter of a prominent cryptocurrency director in Paris. According to France 24, the victim is the daughter of the CEO and co-founder of Paymium, a cryptocurrency exchange in France. The incident occurred in broad daylight, raising concerns about the increase in crimes related to wealth from cryptocurrency.
At 8 AM on Tuesday, four masked men suddenly jumped out of a truck and attacked a couple walking with their child. The targets were the woman and her son, as the kidnappers attempted to force them into the vehicle. The victim's companion fought back, wrestled with the gun, and threw it away. Her screams drew the attention of passersby, causing the kidnappers to flee. The victims suffered only minor injuries.
Unfortunately, this is just one of many incidents that have occurred this year. Earlier, David Balland, co-founder of the major cryptocurrency company Ledger, was kidnapped along with his partner. The situation escalated when the kidnappers cut off his finger to demand a ransom in cryptocurrency. Nine people have been arrested in this case.
Another gang kidnapped a man to force his wealthy son to pay a ransom. The case ended with a police raid and seven people arrested. Other kidnappings involving figures in the cryptocurrency industry or their partners have been reported in Spain and Belgium in recent months.
Authorities suspect that these incidents are connected and part of a growing trend where criminals target individuals involved in the cryptocurrency industry. French Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau announced on Wednesday that he would hold a meeting with cryptocurrency experts to discuss ways to prevent future kidnappings following a series of high-profile incidents in France.
The Financial Action Task Force (FATF) warns that cryptocurrency may attract illegal activity, particularly in areas with weak regulation. Law enforcement and regulatory agencies need to intensify efforts to provide better oversight and protection, which is currently critically needed.
