US-China Agree to Reduce Tariffs After Geneva Talks
After months of rising tension, the US and China have agreed to lower tariffs for 90 days, aiming to ease their trade conflict. The deal came after two days of negotiations in Geneva, hosted by Switzerland, which both sides praised for offering a neutral and productive setting.
While full details of the agreement haven’t been shared yet, both US and Chinese officials said real progress was made. US President Donald Trump signaled a major shift by agreeing to cut tariffs on Chinese goods from 145% to 80%. He gave the final authority to Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, showing trust in his team.
Bessent, who led the US delegation with Ambassador Jamieson Greer, said China’s senior leaders took part in the talks. Greer described the discussions as faster and more positive than expected. He pointed out that the talks were urgent because# of the US’s $1.2 trillion trade deficit, which had led Trump to declare a national emergency and raise tariffs earlier.
This agreement may mark the start of better US-China trade relations. Still, many are waiting to see if it brings real change or just calms things temporarily.
