Why shouldn't wealth be publicly displayed?

Imagine your relative is in a desperate situation and needs 1 million. He knows you have tens of millions, and he can only resort to moral coercion (even worse, he might directly kidnap you), because he has no better options. This seems like the easiest way for him to approach you. If you lend him 800,000, he will hardly feel any psychological burden; after all, 800,000 is just a drop in the bucket for you. Even if he doesn’t repay, you won’t be poorer for it, and he won’t feel overly grateful to you.

Even if you give him 3 million, it won’t lift him out of poverty. He will think it’s quite normal. If he had tens of millions, he would casually lend you 5 million, and you only gave him 3 million, which is clearly not enough to show your loyalty—however, he will console himself by thinking that not everyone is as principled as he is.

Now, suppose he doesn’t know you have money. You could lend him 300,000, and he would be extremely grateful, treating you as a great benefactor. You could even pretend to scrape together funds, helping him gather 600,000, and from then on, he would owe his life to you.

This is the difference between giving control to others and keeping it for yourself.
