Former Binance CEO Changpeng “CZ” Zhao has publicly spotlighted the growing momentum behind real-world asset (RWA) tokenization, particularly through the recent integration of VanEck and Securitize with BNB Chain.

Massive, welcome RWA @Securitize @vaneck_us to @BNBChain.👏

(For the very few who still don't understand, but sadly act like they do, @BNBChain is public blockchain, not a private "platform". Anyone can deploy smart contracts on BNB Chain. This is as basic as it gets.🤷‍♂️) https://t.co/LLxDQHZPmA

In a tweet shared on May 12, CZ emphasized the significance of bringing traditional finance products, like U.S. Treasuries, onto public blockchains.

“BNB Chain is a public chain using PoSA (Proof of Staked Authority) with decentralized governance, not a private chain,” CZ clarified in his tweet, addressing common misconceptions about the network’s accessibility.

The tweet comes in response to Securitize and VanEck’s launch of the VBILL Treasury Fund, which enables on-chain exposure to U.S. Treasury bills across multiple networks, including BNB Chain. This marks another key milestone in the tokenization of RWAs, a trend that is rapidly transforming DeFi and traditional finance.

BNB Chain’s Expanding Institutional Role

BNB Chain, originally developed by Binance but now operating as a community-driven Layer 1 blockchain, supports a wide range of decentralized applications and smart contracts. With the VBILL Fund now live on-chain, users gain tokenized access to U.S. debt instruments, enhancing both liquidity and efficiency for institutions and DeFi platforms alike.

CZ’s statement reinforces that BNB Chain is permissionless and decentralized, operating under a Proof of Staked Authority (PoSA) consensus mechanism that balances performance and decentralization. His remarks come at a time when critics often conflate BNB Chain’s association with Binance as meaning it’s private or restrictedsomething CZ was quick to dispel.

RWA Tokenization: The Next Wave in DeFi?

The integration reflects a larger movement in the blockchain space: the tokenization of real-world assets, including government bonds, real estate, and equities. According to data from DefiLlama, the total value locked (TVL) in RWAs had reached nearly $5 billion by the end of 2023 a figure that continues to climb as institutional-grade products go on-chain.

Tokenization offers multiple advantages, including:

  • Faster settlement times

  • Lower transaction costs

  • Increased accessibility for global investors

  • Improved transparency and composability with DeFi protocols

Projects like VBILL are designed to bring traditional asset exposure into blockchain ecosystems, unlocking new layers of interoperability between crypto and real-world financial instruments.

Looking Ahead

The collaboration between VanEck, a major investment management firm, and Securitize, a leading platform for digital asset securities, signals growing institutional trust in blockchain infrastructure. With BNB Chain supporting these innovations, it stands to play a pivotal role in bridging traditional finance with the decentralized economy.

As tokenized finance continues to evolve, more collaborations like this could reshape global capital markets—one block at a time.
