SEC’s New Direction Under Chair Paul Atkins
At a recent SEC roundtable, newly appointed Chair Paul Atkins announced plans to modernize the agency’s approach to cryptocurrency regulation. He emphasized the need for clear, official rules to support the registration, issuance, custody, and trading of digital assets. Atkins believes the SEC has broad authority under existing securities laws to clarify rules around crypto assets, including defining exemptions for non-securities and setting guidelines for those deemed securities. His proposals include allowing more flexible asset custody options for registrants and expanding permissible trading to include both security and non-security digital assets
