U.S. announces trade agreement with China in Geneva
Treasury Secretary, Scott Bessent: “I am pleased to report that we made substantial progress between the United States and China in these important trade talks. First, I want to thank our Swiss host. The Swiss government has been very kind in providing us with this wonderful place, and I believe that greatly contributed to the productivity we have seen. We will be giving details tomorrow, but I can tell you that the talks were productive. The Deputy Prime Minister, two ministers who were deeply involved, Ambassador Jamieson, and I were present. Last night I spoke with President Trump, as did Ambassador Jamieson, and he is fully informed of what is happening. So tomorrow morning there will be a full briefing.”
U.S. Trade Representative, Ambassador Jamieson Greer: “This was, as the Secretary noted, two very constructive days. It is important to understand how quickly we were able to reach an agreement, which reflects that perhaps the differences were not as great as thought. That said, there was a lot of groundwork done in these two days. Just remember why we are here in the first place: the United States has a massive trade deficit of 1.2 trillion dollars, which is why the President declared a national emergency and imposed tariffs. And we are confident that the agreement we reached with our Chinese partners will help us move forward in resolving that national emergency.”
