Electricity theft linked to illegal cryptocurrency mining in Malaysia has surged by nearly 300% between 2018 and 2024, according to Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB), the country's largest energy provider. The number of detected cases rose from 610 in 2018 to 2,397 in 2024, primarily due to unauthorized miners tapping into subsidized electricity through tampered or bypassed meters .
TNB attributes this increase to the rise in illegal crypto mining operations, which often involve tampering with electricity meters to access power without payment. These activities have not only cost the company hundreds of millions but have also destabilized the power grid .
In response, TNB has collaborated with the Energy Commission, the police, the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission, and local councils to conduct joint operations and nationwide raids, successfully shutting down numerous illegal mining setups. Between 2020 and 2024, the average number of crypto-related electricity theft cases stood at 2,303 per year .
