The fourth most important city in Brazil, Belo Horizonte, seeks to position itself as a center of innovation and technology. This week, local authorities took a decisive step in that direction by approving a bill that makes the city the capital of Bitcoin.
The initiative, aimed at promoting Belo Horizonte as an epicenter of new technologies, sparked a heated debate in the city council. The discussions became intensely politicized, leading to a confrontation between left-wing and right-wing council members, according to local media.
It is important to highlight that proposal 124/25 was presented by council member Vile Santos. Of the 34 council members who participated in the debate, 20 voted in favor of the project, 8 against, and 6 abstained. Supporters of the measure cited international examples, such as the creation of a strategic reserve in Bitcoin by the United States government.
For their part, detractors - primarily representatives of the Workers' Party - criticized the cryptocurrency. Council member Luiza Dulci argued that Bitcoin lacks intrinsic value.
According to her stance, the digital currency is an instrument that favors large investors at the expense of the majority, facilitating the transfer of wealth from citizens to the elites.

Belo Horizonte is now the Capital of Bitcoin
Beyond the political differences generated by Bitcoin, it is undeniable that the adoption of this asset continues to expand. Some council members emphasized that in the state of Minas Gerais, there are more than 2 million people using cryptocurrencies, both for making payments and for saving.
