Metaplanet Overtakes El Salvador in Bitcoin Holdings with Latest 1,241 BTC Acquisition
Japanese investment firm Metaplanet has made headlines again by acquiring an additional 1,241 bitcoins, investing around 18.426 billion yen (approximately 126.7 million USD) as part of its ongoing 'Bitcoin Financial Operations' strategy. The company disclosed that the average purchase price for this latest acquisition was 14,848,061 yen per bitcoin (about 102,119 USD).
Following this purchase, Metaplanet's total Bitcoin holdings have climbed to 6,796 BTC, currently valued at roughly 706 million USD based on a BTC price of around 104,000 USD. According to CEO Simon Gerovich, the company's cumulative bitcoin acquisition cost stands at about 608.2 million USD, translating to an average price of roughly 89,492 USD per bitcoin.
This strategic move means Metaplanet now holds more bitcoin than the nation of El Salvador, which, based on recent data from the country's National Bitcoin Office, possesses 6,174.18 BTC (valued at about 642 million USD). El Salvador previously ranked sixth globally in Bitcoin holdings, following the US, China, the UK, Ukraine, and Bhutan, according to BitBo's Bitcoin Treasuries data.
Commenting on the milestone, Gerovich highlighted the significance of the achievement, stating that what started as a small initiative has now reached a scale comparable to that of nation-states. He emphasized that this is only the beginning of Metaplanet's ambitions in the Bitcoin
