Ethereum's latest major update, the Pec
tra upgrade, went live on May 7, 2025, marking the most significant code change since the 2022 Merge. This upgrade includes 11 Ethereum Improvement Proposals (EIPs) that enhance staking, wallet usability, and network scalability.
Key features of the Pectra upgrade:
Staking Improvements: The staking limit for validators increased from 32 ETH to 2,048 ETH (EIP-7251), allowing large stakers to consolidate their holdings under fewer validators, simplifying the process.
Account Abstraction: Wallets can now temporarily execute smart contract code (EIP-7702), enabling features like paying gas fees with tokens other than ETH, social account recovery, and combining multiple actions into a single transaction, greatly improving user experience.
Layer 2 Scalability: Data storage blobs for Layer 2 roll ups have doubled in size, potentially lowering gas fees and improving dApp scalability.
Following the upgrade, Ethereum’s price surged nearly 20%, its biggest gain since 2021, trading above $2,100 amid a broader crypto market rally and renewed investor confidence. However, network activity remains somewhat subdued, suggesting a full recovery may take time.
Overall, Pectra makes Ethereum more user-friendly, efficient, and scalable, positioning it closer to a modern blockchain network and potentially paving the way for wider adoption
