Phishing Scam on Chrome Costs Crypto User Over $20,000—A Critical Security Reminder
A recent phishing incident has highlighted the growing threat of sophisticated scams targeting crypto users. One user reportedly lost over $20,000 after unknowingly interacting with a fake version of the ChangeNOW exchange while browsing through Google Chrome.
The attacker used Punycode manipulation—a technique that swaps normal characters with lookalike Unicode versions—to create a fake domain nearly identical to the real one. Just a subtle difference in a single letter was enough to deceive the user into trusting the malicious site. As a result, their assets were drained.
This case serves as a stark reminder: double-check URLs, bookmark trusted sites, and be cautious, especially when dealing with high-value transactions. As phishing tactics become more advanced, user vigilance becomes more critical than ever.
