Sam Altman to Elon Musk: "Let’s Be Friends"

Setting Aside the Feud

In a surprising and heartfelt gesture, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman extended an olive branch to Elon Musk, signaling a willingness to move past their long-standing differences. The spark? A resurfaced post where Altman had criticized Donald Trump—a moment Musk chose to highlight.

A Decade-Old Divide Revisited

Musk recently reshared a post from 2016 in which Altman said he would “never vote for Trump,” quoting Paul Graham who noted Altman’s efforts in opposing Trump. In response, Altman simply replied, “Thank you, Paul.”

He followed up by referencing a 2022 post from Musk that had called for Trump to “sail into the sunset,” admitting, “We were both wrong, or at least I certainly was.”

AGI Over Ego

Altman closed the exchange with a conciliatory message:

“Anyway, see you next week, let’s be friends 🥺👉👈 agi too important to let a lil feud get in the way.”

This public outreach highlights Altman's belief that the development of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) far outweighs personal or political disputes.

From Tension to Collaboration?

Musk, now leading the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), has taken a visible role in shaping government and AI policy, while Altman has been investing heavily in U.S.-based AI infrastructure through the $500 billion Project Stargate.

Their professional paths have long been entangled—Musk co-founded OpenAI in 2015, which later transitioned into a for-profit model under Altman’s leadership, prompting criticism from Musk.

Why AGI Matters

Unlike narrow AI, which is designed for specific tasks, AGI aims to replicate human-level intelligence—learning, adapting, and applying knowledge across domains. It’s this shared mission that Altman hopes will bridge old divides.
