US President Donald Trump announced on Friday the possibility of reducing tariffs on China from the current 145% to 80%, ahead of negotiations between the two countries in Switzerland to ease trade tensions.
"Apparently, 80% tariffs on China is about right!" Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform, according to Agence France-Presse.
He added that "it's up to Scott," referring to the head of Washington's negotiating team, US Treasury Secretary Scott Besant, who will meet with Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng this week in Geneva to try to calm tensions in global markets.
Trump did not mention in his post whether he believes 80% should be the final tariff level on Chinese goods if the trade war ends, or whether it is merely a temporary measure.
In another post in capital letters, Trump wrote, "China should open its market to the United States. It would be very good for them. Closed markets no longer work."
Trump's comments represent the latest sign of easing tensions between the world's two largest economies.
Trump said the agreement with Britain would be the first of many, and that he hoped the difficult talks with the European Union, as well as China, would yield results soon as well.
