A High-Stakes Dispute Between Billionaires

In a pointed critique, philanthropist Bill Gates has accused Elon Musk of endangering the lives of the world’s poorest children by allegedly dismantling the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) through his newly established Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).

Humanitarian Consequences of Aid Withdrawal

Gates claims the abrupt shutdown of USAID programs has resulted in the expiration of essential food and medical supplies, worsening the spread of preventable diseases such as HIV, measles, and polio in some of the most underserved regions. Grants supporting hospitals in areas like Gaza Province, Mozambique, have reportedly been withdrawn, disrupting vital health programs including HIV prevention initiatives.

“The image of the world’s richest man contributing to the suffering of the world’s poorest children is deeply troubling,” Gates stated.

Global Health at Risk

He further warned that Musk’s actions could lead to a surge in child mortality and the resurgence of preventable diseases. The sudden removal of support, Gates argues, has left fragile healthcare infrastructures in disarray across Africa and Southeast Asia—regions heavily reliant on USAID’s presence.

Gates Foundation Reinforces Its Mission

In contrast, Gates reaffirmed his long-standing commitment to global philanthropy, announcing that the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation will be fully spent down by 2045. Over the next two decades, the foundation plans to invest $200 billion in global health, education, and development.

“We’re not here to exist forever—we’re here to make the greatest possible impact while we can,” Gates concluded.
