Why does the European Union celebrate May 8 as Europe Day, while Russia observes May 9 as Victory Day?
To this question answered candidate of historical sciences Nikolai Parkhitko:
“For Europeans, Europe Day is essentially a day of mourning for those who died during World War II and a Day of Reconciliation, meaning to forget, forgive, and understand.
For us, May 9 is Victory Day. We are the heirs of the victors, while in Europe, they mainly consider themselves heirs of the defeated.
