A man from Virginia, USA, was sentenced to more than three decades in prison for sending cryptocurrency to the self-proclaimed Islamic State (ISIS). On May 7, Judge David Novak sentenced Mohammed Azharuddin Chhipa to 30 years and 4 months in prison for transferring $185,000 to ISIS, according to the Department of Justice on May 8.
From October 2019 to October 2022, Chhipa, 35, collected and sent money to female members of ISIS in Syria, helping them escape from prison camps and funding their fighting. Chhipa raised funds for this terrorist organization through social media, receiving money online or traveling hundreds of miles to collect donations in person.
Chhipa converted this amount of money into cryptocurrency and sent it to Turkey to smuggle to ISIS members in Syria. A federal jury convicted Chhipa in December on charges of conspiracy to support a terrorist organization and four counts of supporting and attempting to support a terrorist organization.
Chhipa, an Indian-American citizen, attempted to flee the United States during an FBI investigation by creating multiple email accounts and purchasing bus tickets under a fake name. After being discovered, Interpol returned Chhipa to the United States.
Chhipa's case highlights the warning that funding terrorism will lead to serious legal consequences.
