🏛️ Belo Horizonte: Now the 'Capital of Bitcoin'
On May 7, 2025, the City Council of Belo Horizonte approved Bill 124/2025, which declares the city as the 'Capital of Bitcoin.' The proposal, authored by councilor Vile Santos (PL), was approved with 20 votes in favor, 8 against, and 6 abstentions.
The aim of the project is to position BH as a hub of technological and financial innovation, promoting events, debates, and training on crypto assets. Additionally, it seeks to encourage local commerce to adopt Bitcoin as a means of payment.
Program 'Free Bitcoin': Payments with BTC in Commerce and Taxes
Another significant advancement is Bill 95/2025, which proposes the 'Free Bitcoin' program. This program aims to allow commercial establishments to accept Bitcoin as a form of payment and enables citizens to pay fees, fines, and municipal taxes using the cryptocurrency. To make this initiative feasible, the city hall would hire a specialized company to receive the assets and convert them into cash.
