The Ethereum Dev Who Gave It All Away — Twice
In 2015, Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum, received a massive share of the ETH supply at launch — over 500,000 ETH. When prices soared during the 2017 bull run, his holdings were worth over $150 million.
But instead of holding forever, Vitalik began quietly donating large portions to causes like:
COVID-19 relief in India
Longevity research
Open-source projects
Even dog-themed memecoins (like Shiba Inu) — which he burned or gave away to avoid price manipulation
In 2021, when Shiba Inu devs sent him half the total supply (~$7 billion), Vitalik burned 90% of it and donated over $1 billion worth to the India COVID Relief Fund — one of the largest single philanthropic acts in crypto history.
His reason? He didn't want “that kind of power.”
