MEME Act: Legislative Proposal in the U.S.
The Modern Emoluments and Malfeasance Enforcement Act (MEME Act) is a bill introduced by Democratic Congressman Sam Liccardo in February 2025. Its goal is to prohibit high-ranking officials of the U.S. government—including the president, vice president, members of Congress, and senior executive branch officials—and their close relatives from issuing, promoting, or financially benefiting from digital assets such as cryptocurrencies and memecoins. This initiative arises in response to the controversy surrounding the launch of tokens like $TRUMP and $MELANIA, promoted by former President Donald Trump and former First Lady Melania Trump, respectively. The bill aims to prevent conflicts of interest and potential cases of corruption related to the promotion of digital assets by political figures.
