I spent most of my professional career in the personal computer industry, including being part of the development teams for some of the first personal computers. In those days, designers like me had a constant battle trying to innovate while maintaining compatibility with the standard PC architecture. The "standard" was compatibility with the IBM AT - a computer released in 1984. In fact, it was an important marketing requirement for all end-users in the 80s and 90s to claim that their computer was "PC compatible." This meant that anything we did with our designs needed to ensure that any piece of hardware or software that worked on an IBM AT would also have to work on our machines. $BTC
