Satoshi Era Whales Move US$ 325 Million in Bitcoin After a Decade of Inactivity
In a surprising move, two Bitcoin wallets inactive since 2014, known as “Satoshi Era whales,” transferred a total of 3,422 BTC, equivalent to approximately US$ 324.2 million, on the morning of Tuesday, May 6, 2025. These transactions represent some of the largest movements of old Bitcoins observed in recent years.
The first wallet, identified as “1NWPS,” had been inactive for 10.5 years and transferred 2,343 BTC, valued at around US$ 222.2 million. The second, “1PiEK,” inactive for 11.75 years, moved 1,079 BTC, worth approximately US$ 102.5 million. Both wallets acquired their Bitcoins in 2013, when the price of the cryptocurrency was below US$ 1,000.
The motivation behind these transfers remains unknown. Experts suggest that they may be related to the recovery of private keys, asset liquidation, or preparation for sales amid expectations of market volatility, especially with the Federal Reserve's imminent decision on interest rates on May 7.
This resurgence of old whales highlights the influence that large Bitcoin holders still exert over the market, even after long periods of inactivity.
