The world’s largest battery-powered ship, Hull 096, has been launched in Tasmania. Built by shipmaker Incat, the 130-meter-long vessel—named China Zorrilla after a famous Uruguayan actress—is the biggest electric ship ever made. It will run between Buenos Aires, Argentina, and Uruguay across the Río de la Plata, carrying up to 2,100 passengers and 225 vehicles using only battery power.

The ship holds over 250 tonnes of batteries with a 40+ megawatt-hour energy storage system. Eight electric water jets will power the vessel across the river in just 90 minutes. Charging stations will be built on both sides of the route.

Inside, the ship will feature a 2,300-square-meter duty-free shopping area—the largest ever on a ferry. Final battery work and testing will happen later this year on Tasmania’s River Derwent.
