France has successfully dismantled a serious extortion kidnapping case involving cryptocurrency, where the father of a crypto millionaire was kidnapped by a masked gang in broad daylight in the center of Paris.
At 10:30 AM on May 1st, a man – confirmed as the father of a famous crypto entrepreneur – was forced into a vehicle by 4 thugs using a truck in the 14th district of the capital #Paris . He was taken to a house in the suburbs and held for several days. The criminal group cut off one of the victim's fingers to apply pressure, while demanding a ransom of 5 to 7 million euros (equivalent to over 7.9 million USD).
Fortunately, on the night of May 3rd, the French special forces raided the detention site, successfully rescuing the victim and arresting all 5 suspects, all of whom were around 20 years old. No ransom was paid prior to this operation.
The identity of the crypto millionaire and the victim has not been disclosed for security reasons, but both have been confirmed as co-founders of a crypto marketing company at #Malta . The victim's wife reported that the family had received many threats related to their crypto assets, despite having increased personal security.
This is not the first time crypto has become the target of kidnappings:
In January 2025, the co-founder of the Ledger cold wallet was kidnapped and tortured in France.
In November 2024, the CEO of WonderFi was forced to transfer 1 million USD in crypto in Toronto, Canada.
In February 2025, in Chicago, an entire family and a nanny were held for a ransom of 15 million USD.
In March 2025, the famous streamer Amouranth was broken into and threatened with a gun over her crypto wallet.
The increase in these incidents clearly shows a new security risk in the world of digital assets. It's no longer just about network hacks; many gangs have turned to kidnapping, threats, and torture to seize crypto assets from victims.
