The world’s largest battery-powered ship, Hull 096, has officially launched in Tasmania. Built by shipbuilder Incat, the 130-meter vessel—named China Zorrilla in honor of the renowned Uruguayan actress—is the largest electric ship ever constructed. It will operate solely on battery power, transporting up to 2,100 passengers and 225 vehicles across the Río de la Plata between Buenos Aires, Argentina, and Uruguay.

Equipped with over 250 tonnes of batteries and a 40+ megawatt-hour energy storage system, the ship is powered by eight electric water jets and will complete the river crossing in just 90 minutes. Charging stations will be installed at both ends of the route.

Onboard, passengers will find a 2,300-square-meter duty-free shopping area—the largest ever featured on a ferry. Final battery installation and testing are scheduled to take place later this year on Tasmania’s River Derwent.
