Ban on Private Coins in the EU: Current Situation and Consequences
In 2023, the European Union intensified measures to combat money laundering, which affected the circulation of private cryptocurrencies such as Monero (XMR) and Zcash (ZEC). In May, Binance announced plans to delist 12 private tokens in France, Italy, Spain, and Poland, citing local regulatory requirements.
However, after feedback from the community and projects, Binance reconsidered its decision. On June 26, the company stated that it would change the classification of private coins to comply with EU requirements and continue supporting trading of some of them. Nevertheless, certain coins, including Monero and MobileCoin, remain under restrictions.
Thus, while there is no complete ban on private coins in the EU, the tightening of regulations and transparency requirements create obstacles for their use. Users should closely monitor changes in legislation and exchange policies to adapt to the new reality.
