Musk will now have his own city

Residents of South Texas overwhelmingly supported Elon Musk's initiative to create the city of Starbase.

According to the voting results published online by the Cameron County Elections Department, 212 people voted 'for', six 'against', reports AP. The majority of registered voters are SpaceX employees.

Elon Musk reacted to the voting results on his social media page X, writing that 'now it's a real city!'

The new city of 1.45 square miles will be located around the headquarters and launch site of SpaceX. Virtually all its residents are employees of the company or their family members.

The creation of a new municipality involves the formation of local authorities — a mayor and two commissioners who will be responsible for managing planning, taxation, and other matters. However, some residents of neighboring areas oppose this initiative and accuse the company of harming the environment, reports BBC.

The planned area of the new city covers approximately 1.6 square miles (3.9 sq. km) — before SpaceX began acquiring land in the area in 2012, it was quite sparsely populated. Since then, company facilities and housing for employees have appeared in the area, and Musk himself has also settled there. Among the signs of his presence are a street named Memes Street and a large bust of the entrepreneur, which was recently vandalized.

In recent years, Musk has moved many of his companies and headquarters from California to Texas, citing more favorable regulatory conditions and his dislike of the policies of California, which is dominated by the Democratic Party.
