Activist Aid Ship Heading to Gaza Hit by Drones, NGO Claims

VALLETTA — A humanitarian ship carrying aid and activists en route to Gaza was reportedly struck by drones in international waters off Malta early Friday, according to the Freedom Flotilla Coalition. The group alleges Israel was behind the attack, though Israeli officials have yet to respond.

The Maltese government confirmed that a mayday call was received just after midnight, with reports of a fire onboard. A nearby tugboat and Maltese patrol vessel assisted in securing the ship and its 16 passengers — 12 crew members and 4 civilians. However, according to the NGO and activist Greta Thunberg, who was set to join the mission, the vessel remains at risk.

Video footage released by the group shows flames on the ship, named Conscience, alongside flashes of light in the sky and the sound of explosions.

The Freedom Flotilla Coalition is calling for international accountability, demanding Israeli ambassadors be summoned over what they describe as violations of international law, including the ongoing blockade of Gaza and this attack in international waters.

The incident has raised fresh concerns over maritime security and humanitarian efforts in the region.
