Texas’ Newest Town Could Soon Have a SpaceX Employee as Mayor**
The future mayor of Texas’ newest town might also be a SpaceX employee. The voters—many of whom build rockets for SpaceX, rent homes from the company, and live on SpaceX-owned land—will decide this weekend whether to officially incorporate their community into a municipality.
The area, informally known as Starbase, surrounds SpaceX’s Starship development site. If voters approve the incorporation, elected officials would gain significant authority under state law—but their close ties to SpaceX could raise complex conflicts of interest.
Elon Musk’s aerospace company is effectively reviving the concept of the company town, where work, housing, and governance are all intertwined.
