Wandering the streets of Los Angeles, a little puppy’s eyes met two LAPD officers. Without a sound, he ran straight to them, as if he knew they'd be the ones to help.

At their feet, he paused, eyes filled with desperate hope: “Please help me.”

Officers Taverna and Mercado didn’t hesitate. They scooped him up, holding him close, and drove him back to the station. In that moment, as the car hummed along, the puppy, now safe, curled into Officer Mercado’s legs, snuggling in as if he knew he’d finally found a place where he belonged.

They named him Hobart, after the street he was found on. The station embraced him, but it was Officer Mercado who formed an unbreakable bond with him.
