Economist Mohamed Al-Erian, President of Queen's College at the University of Cambridge, stated that gold has been the standout performer among global assets in 2025 so far, while oil has been the biggest loser. This came in a post of his on the 'X' platform, where he reviewed the performance of major asset classes since the beginning of the current year compared to their performance in 2024.

Al-Erian noted that #الذهب led the gains with a strong increase of 24.48% since the beginning of 2025, after having jumped by 27.36% in 2024, confirming the continued appeal of the yellow metal as a safe haven amid economic tensions and geopolitical fluctuations. In contrast, oil performed notably weakly, declining by 18.84% after having maintained relative stability in 2024 with a slight increase of only 0.1%.

As for the currency #بيتكوين , it recorded lackluster performance with an increase of no more than 0.79% since the beginning of the year, compared to massive gains exceeding 119% in the previous year, reflecting a state of volatility and uncertainty in the cryptocurrency market.

Regarding the financial markets, Al-Erian explained that U.S. stocks experienced a collective decline, with the Dow Jones index falling by 4.41%, Nasdaq by 5.31%, while #مؤشر_ستاندرد_آند_بورز 500 decreased by 9.65%. In contrast, European stocks achieved positive performance, as #مؤشر_ستوكس_600 rose by 3.91%, and #مؤشر_فوتسي_100 by 3.94%.

Al-Erian concluded his comment by pointing out that April 2025 began with weak performance, but the markets showed a noticeable improvement as the end of the month approached, leaving the door open for recovery possibilities in the coming periods.
