$DOGE Originally formed as a joke, Dogecoin was created by IBM software engineer Billy Markus and Adobe software engineer Jackson Palmer. They wanted to create a peer-to-peer digital currency that could reach a broader audience than Bitcoin. Dogecoin was officially launched on December 6, 2013, and in the first 30 days, there were over 1 million visitors to Dogecoin.com.
On May 4, 2021, the value of Dogecoin surpassed the symbolic barrier of $0.50 for the first time.
In April 2023, a surge in Dogecoin was attributed to Elon Musk, who temporarily changed the logo on the Twitter app to a Doge logo.
On November 14, 2024, elected President Donald Trump announced that Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy would lead a new Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE, an acronym that shares the name Dogecoin. The price of Dogecoin skyrocketed shortly thereafter.
