The cryptocurrency project "World" (formerly known as "Worldcoin") announced on Wednesday the launch of its services in the United States starting tomorrow, introducing a biometric identity verification system in the country where it originated.
This announcement came during the "The World Finally" event held by the company in San Francisco, where co-founder Sam Altman and CEO Alex Blania showcased the expansion of what they described as "the largest human-centered identity and financial network."
Biometric verification across America
Americans will be able to verify their "World ID" starting in six cities: Atlanta, Austin, Los Angeles, Miami, Nashville, and San Francisco. The company plans to deploy 7,500 "Orb" devices equipped with eye-scanning technology across the United States by the end of the year, quadrupling its current global presence.
Altman said during the event: "America must lead innovation, not resist it." The company was founded near the South Park neighborhood in San Francisco and previously operated in over 160 countries but not in the United States.
