Buterin aims to grow the Ethereum ecosystem by strengthening both its technical architecture and community foundations. This year, he’s focused on Ethereum’s Layer 1 roadmap, targeting improvements in security, decentralization, and privacy.

In a recent blog post, he highlighted key areas for development in 2025, such as “single-slot finality,” long-term virtual machines, statelessness, and greater resilience. His top priority remains the Ethereum protocol itself.

Buterin’s renewed push comes as Cardano recently surpassed Ethereum in developer activity. He underscored the need for “full-stack security,” open-source commitment, and privacy—stressing the importance of secure, decentralized, and private user experiences across wallets and applications.

Beyond core protocol work, Buterin is also focused on broader initiatives he describes as “big-picture d/acc.” These include building communication tools, enhancing social infrastructure, governance mechanisms, and funding public goods.

He also expressed interest in fields like cryptography, operating systems, hardware, physical infrastructure, and bio-defense—while noting that some areas are now being led by other team members.
