Pudgy Penguins Taps Walrus Protocol

In an April 29 blog post, the Pudgy Penguins team confirmed partnering with the Walrus protocol to store all its social media content, including images and GIFs. This collaboration appears just a few days after the NFT team launched a platform that allows digital artists and fans to create content such as UGC, memes, and X posts around $PENGU and get paid for it. This platform caused many Pudgy Penguins-inspired contents to flood the crypto X.

Unveiled in 2024, Igloo is the parent company for Lil Pudgy, a non-fungible token collection that features a fixed supply of 19,950 cartoon NFTs and Pudgy Penguins, a globally acknowledged non-fungible token collection featuring a limited edition of 8,888 penguins hosted on the Ethereum blockchain network. The Pudgy Penguins and Lil Pudgy NFT collections have grown to become one of the leading NFT collections in the NFT market.

The Pudgy Penguins creator started purely as a non-fungible token company. Over time, the company has evolved to become one of the leading cartoon toy brands, with physical outlets in various parts, including the United States and Canada. The Pudgy Penguins have since expanded into other areas, including animation. Earlier this year, the Pudgy Penguins NFT team joined TheSoul Publishing to launch a “Lil Pudgys” YouTube series.

On the other hand, the Walrus protocol is a decentralized storage solution, primarily designed for the Web3 ecosystem, built on the Sui blockchain. It aims to provide low-cost, efficient, and censorship-resistant data storage for various applications, including NFTs, decentralized websites, social media content, and more. The protocol uses advanced cryptographic techniques to offer anonymous transactions and secure smart contract execution.

Pudgy Penguins X Walrus Integration

The Pudgy Penguins x Walrus partnership announcement was made at Token2049 Dubai, during Pudgy’s “Inside the Igloo” event. By integrating Walrus Protocol, the Pudgy Penguins NFT team is shifting to a decentralized storage platform to ensure persistent access to content, performant content delivery, and programmable capabilities to power new, personalized user experiences.

Under the new integration, the Pudgy Penguins team will be able to share content effortlessly and consistent with built-in version control, ensuring seamless updates across teams, platforms, and partners. Tusky is a pre-eminent platform partner in the Walrus ecosystem and one of the earliest builders to adopt the protocol. Tusky allows Walrus users and developers to upload, manage, and program large files and rich media directly on-chain. While commenting about this partnership, Luca Netz, CEO of Igloo Inc., remarked:

“Managing creative assets should be simple, not scattered. Walrus makes it easy for our team to upload, organize, and share content while ensuring it remains persistent, permissioned, and aligned with how we build in Web3.”

Walrus protocol, through Tusky, will provide Pudgy Penguins with the permanence and resilience needed to support global-scale content distribution. By adopting a decentralized infrastructure, the Pudgy Penguins NFT team is laying the foundation for more consistent, reliable, and scalable content management. For Walrus, it highlights how decentralized storage can quietly power real-world applications behind the scenes.
