Users of Ledger hardware wallets have become targets of a new fraud scheme. Malefactors are sending paper letters that imitate official messages from the company, demanding urgent 'security updates.' The letters contain a QR code that leads to a counterfeit website, where users are asked to enter a 24-word recovery phrase (seed phrase). Entering this phrase allows the fraudsters to access the wallet and steal crypto assets. This was reported by Cointelegraph, citing an official statement from Ledger.

Ledger has confirmed that these letters are fraudulent and urged users to be vigilant. Ledger never asks users to disclose their seed phrase or enter it on third-party websites. The scheme likely uses data obtained from a marketing database leak of Ledger in 2020, when names, addresses, and emails of about 300,000 customers were exposed.

Experts advise checking URLs, avoiding links in emails, and using only the official Ledger Live app. This attack emphasizes the importance of protecting personal data in the crypto space.
